Dolphin Bay on Ilha do Mel
The Dolphin Bay is one of the most impressive natural spectacles on the Paraná coast — and most tourists who visit Ilha do Mel don't even know it exists. Located between Ilha do Mel and Ilha das Peças, this region is considered the best spot for dolphin watching in Paraná and functions as a true nursery for these aquatic mammals.
In this guide, we explain everything you need to know to take the tour: how to get there, how much it costs, when to go, and how to increase your chances of seeing the dolphins up close.
Where is Dolphin Bay located?
Dolphin Bay is located in the southern part of Ilha do Mel, in the region where Paranaguá Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is a protected marine area situated between two points:
-
Ilha do Mel (west side)
-
Ilha das Peças (east side)
| Information | Details |
| --------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Location | Between Ilha do Mel and Ilha das Peças, Paranaguá Bay |
| Access | Only by boat or speedboat |
| Distance from the island | 20–30 min by boat |
| Type of area | Natural dolphin nursery |
| Protection | Environmental preservation area |
Ecological importance: The region is considered a nursery because the calm, sheltered waters of the bay offer ideal conditions for female dolphins to nurse and protect their offspring from deep-sea predators.
How to get to Dolphin Bay
The only way to reach Dolphin Bay is by boat or speedboat. There are no land trails leading there — the bay is in open water, outside the inhabited perimeter of the island.

The typical tour
The most popular tour is the "Island Tour + Dolphin Bay". The route usually includes:
- Departure from the pier (Brasília or Encantadas)
- Navigation along the east coast of Ilha do Mel — view of Fora, Grande and Miguel beaches from the sea
- Arrival at Baía dos Golfinhos — stop for observation (15–30 min)
- Continuation to Ilha das Peças — lunch break at a local restaurant
- Return along the west coast — view of the Lighthouse, Fortress and Encantadas from the sea
- Arrival at the starting point
Total duration: 4 to 6 hours, depending on the group's pace and the length of stops.
When to go: best time and schedule
Dolphins can be spotted year-round in Dolphin Bay, but certain periods significantly increase your chances:
| Best time | Why |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Early morning (7am–10am) | Dolphins are more active and the water is calmer |
| Calm sea days | Low waves make it easier to observe the animals on the surface |
| Outside of the full moon | More stable tides, less murky water |
| Spring and summer | Higher concentration of females with calves |
Boatman's tip: Dolphins often appear in groups. If a boatman spots a group, he communicates with the others by radio — therefore, tours during busier times (summer weekends) sometimes have more sightings because more boats are patrolling the area.
What to expect from the tour
Dolphins
In Dolphin Bay, it is common to spot bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), the most frequent species in the Paranaguá Bay region. They are curious and sometimes approach boats, especially when the boat maintains a constant speed and does not make sudden movements.
Typical behaviors observed:
-
Partial jumps on the surface
-
Swimming in groups (herds of 5 to 20 individuals)
-
Females with calves swimming side by side
-
Curious approach to boats
Attention: Swimming with the dolphins in the bay is prohibited. Interaction should be visual only, so as not to stress the animals or interfere with the maternal behavior of the females.
The Island of Parts
The stop at Ilha das Peças is one of the highlights of the tour. The island has:
-
Traditional seafood restaurants (the shrimp moqueca is famous)
-
Deserted beach — very few tourists disembark on their own
-
Panoramic view of Paranaguá Bay
Tip: Bring cash. Ilha das Peças doesn't have an ATM and not all restaurants accept cards.
Prices and operators
The price of the tour varies depending on the type of boat and the number of people:
| Tour Type | Average Price (2026) | Duration |
| ------------------------------------- | ------------------ | ------- |
| Shared Boat (closed group) | R$ 120–180/person | 4–5h |
| Private Speedboat (up to 6 people) | R$ 800–1,200 total | 4–6h |
| 360° Tour + Dolphin Bay | R$ 200–280/person | 6h |
Accredited Operators
Important: Always choose operators accredited by the Brazilian Navy. They follow safety standards and respect the rules for approaching animals.
-
Dahora Passeios — departures from Brasília and Encantadas, new boats
-
Guia da Ilha do Mel — personalized itineraries, local guide
-
Passeio 360° (Carol) — combines a tour of the island + Dolphin Bay
Reservations: On weekends and holidays during peak season, book at least 2 days in advance. Outside of peak season, it is possible to book the tour on the day directly at the piers.
Tips for amazing observation
- Bring binoculars — dolphins don't always come very close to the boat.
- Use oil-free sunscreen — oil-based products pollute the water and scare the animals away.
- Keep quiet when you see them — loud noises scare the dolphins.
- Do not feed the animals — it is prohibited and harms their health.
- Bring a camera with zoom — close-up photos are only possible if the dolphins want to get closer.
- Wear comfortable clothes and bring a jacket — the wind at sea can be cold, even on warm days.
Perfect combination: Dolphin Bay + Island Tour
A trip to Dolphin Bay is a perfect complement to a 2-day itinerary on Ilha do Mel (Honey Island):
| Day | Morning | Afternoon |
| ----- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | Boat arrival + accommodation in Encantadas | Encantadas Cave Trail + Bananal Beach |
| 2 | Boat trip through Dolphin Bay (departure 7 am) | Conchas Lighthouse + Fora Beach |
Economy: If you are in a group, negotiate a package that includes the boat trip + accommodation. Many guesthouses have partnerships with boatmen and can get better prices.
