FAROL DAS CONCHAS
The island's most famous view
via Google Maps
ABOUT
Farol das Conchas is the postcard landmark of Ilha do Mel. Built between 1870 and 1872 by order of Emperor D. Pedro II, the lighthouse sits atop Morro das Conchas and offers the most spectacular view of the entire island. There are about 140 steps of staircase to the top, where you see 360 degrees of scenery — all beaches, the sea, the hills and the villages. The construction used materials imported from Scotland and internal visits are not allowed, but the external viewpoint is more than enough. The location served as a set for the film "A Ostra e o Vento" (1997).
